  • Dr Sugan Appasamy was born in Pietersburg, South Africa
  • Primary school was at the Andrew Anthony School in Laudium.
  • Graduating with Distinction from Laudium High School.
  • Started his medical training at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg South Africa.
  • Student years were spent at Hillbrow Hospital, Coronation Hospital and the world renowned Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, Johannesburg
  • He graduated in 1986 with the MBBCh at the Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, South Africa.
  • Registered with the South African Medical and Dental Council
  • His Internship began at the Old Johannesburg Hospital or Hillbrow Hospital as it was commonly known.
  • The internship year included Oncology, Medicine and Surgery.
  • He worked under a world authority on Hypertension, Professor Harry Seftel
  • In 1988 he started his first Medical Practice in Boom Street, Marabastad, Pretoria
  • He continued in General Practice until 1990.
  • During this time he covered Workcover injuries and occupational injuries at the Kalafong Hospital in Atteridgeville Pretoria.
  • He also worked in the emergency department of the HF Verwoerd Hospital in Pretoria covering workcover injuries.
  • Sugan was also involved in treating Motor Vehicle Accident Insurance cases from this period
  • He also worked at the South African Transport Services [SATS] as the Panel doctor.
  • This appointment continued from 1988 until around 2001.
  • Here he was in charge of the entire workforce based at Pretoria Station.
  • He had extensive Occupational Health experience dealing with thousands of Railway employees every month.
  • In the latter part of 1990 he started working as a Medical Officer in the Orthopaedic Department of Garankuwa Hospital, which is on the academic circuit of Pretoria University.
  • Subsequently in 1991 he was appointed to the General Surgical staff of Coronation Hospital and JG Strijdom Hospitals under Professor Desmond Pantanowitz in Johannesburg
  • After completing this period in General Surgery and running two surgical wards he stared general practice in Pretoria.
  • In 1991 Sugan opened his second practice in Bosman Street in Pretoria.This was at the Dairy Mall near Pretoria Station
  • In 1996 He studied Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine and attained a Diploma in this field.
  • Registration with the Allied Health Practitioners Board of South Africa
  • In 2004 Hons BSc in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Stellenbosch.
  • The clinical rotation was completed at the Tygerberg Teaching hospital in the Western Cape.
  • He subsequently opened various practices in the Pretoria City Centre.
  • He established an after hours clinic in Erasmia from 2000-2006
  • In 2000 he purchased a practice in Noordwyk, South Africa.
  • He has extensive experience dealing with HIV, Aids and antiretroviral therapy in South Africa.
  • Experience in Respiratory disease including Asthma, Tuberculosis and COPD
  • Childhood illnesses, gastrointestinal infections and general paediatric conditions
  • Ante natal care form pre conception to delivery
  • Shared care with obstetricians and gynaecologists including high risk pregnancies and genetic abnormalities
  • Emergency management and updated current CPR skills
  • After twenty years of practice in South Africa he relocated to Perth in 2006 seeking new challenges and new adventures.
  • He was registered as a Specialist General Practitioner with AHPRA in 2006
  • Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 2008
  • Examiner with the RACGP for the Fellowship Examinations
  • He has been in practice at the Yanchep Medical Centre for the past 12 years.
